A Tribute to Johnny Cash.It is with great reverence for Johnny Cash, that I am inspired to continue his music and keep his torch burning with our tribute to Johnny Cash.

The human struggles and challenges which Johnny Cash sang about are as prevalent today as they were throughout his career, which spanned over three generations of devoted listeners. Johnny Cash moved us all to look deep, with greater compassion and understanding at ourselves and others.

The members of The Cash Band and I strive to remain true to the humanity that was such an important part of Johnny Cash’s music.

The Cash Band, a team of highly trained professional musicians, recreate the authentic sound of The Tennessee Three and Johnny’s later years, with a bit of The Highwaymen.

Laura Lucy embodies the spirit of June Carter Cash with her captivating presence and light hearted nature. The endearing harmonies of Johnny and June are recreated and come alive.

With a deep, bass-baritone voice and mournful eyes, Harold Ford could be the doppelganger of “The Man in Black.”

But the Greenwich resident isn’t a Johnny Cash impersonator. For Ford, singing like Cash just comes naturally. “I don’t have to try,” Ford said.

For years, people have told the singer that he looks and sounds like the country music legend.

“I’m not trying to sound like Johnny Cash. It’s just the kind of voice I have. I’m singing his songs, but they are coming out like I am his brother. You wouldn’t believe the comments I get on my appearance and my voice,” he said.

Ford finally decided to give in to what just came naturally. For the last year, his shows have become a tribute to the celebrated singer with performances of Cash hits like “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Jackson.”

Harold Ford and The Cash Band will perform their Johnny Cash Tribute on Saturday and Sunday at the Carol Theater in Chestertown. The show will include around 30 of Cash’s songs and an appearance by 8-year-old guitarist and Cash fan Cristo Lewis.

The band also features tribute artist Laura Lucy on vocals as June Carter, Sten Isachsen on lead guitar, Mitch Throop on stand-up bass, Peter Maine on drums and Les Wheeler on rhythm guitar. “We have some excellent talent in the band. We’ve really been getting an unbelievable response from people,” Ford said.

The singer has been surprised by the demographics of the audiences at his shows, which includes a mix of both people from Cash’s generation and music buffs in their 20s and 30s.”Even the kids are coming around. The kids are some of the biggest fans,” Ford said.

Harold thinks the message of the music is what has made Johnny Cash an American icon.”The fans are coming around to Johnny Cash looking for simple truths,” Ford said. “With all the senseless things that go on these days, they want to identify with those grassroots feelings and storytelling.”

Although Ford always has enjoyed Cash’s music, his recent performances have given him a new appreciation.

“The more that I do Johnny Cash’s songs, the more I identify with the message,” he said.
